2018 Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, WestLands
Library Wine | 93 Points - Wine Enthusiast
This WestLands Chardonnay, showing the benefit of a couple of years in the cellar, maintains its striking Chablis-like focus while exhibiting beautiful integration. It is a perfect example of how delightfully a Chardonnay can age when made with such careful decisions. It has great texture and flavor worthy of equally great company and conversation.
About this wine
WINEMAKER NOTES
The bright primary aromas of citrus blossom have started to mature, now woven together with fragrant hints of cedar, yielding a gentle, developed dimension. In the mouth, the characteristic brisk acidity remains elevated and straight, yet the orchard fruit—tart pear and Golden Delicious—has achieved greater density and an appealing umami element, superbly balanced by enduring slate notes. The finish is long utterly dry, and palate-awakening, making is a polished, sophisticated accompaniment to elevated cuisine.
THE VINTAGE
The 2018 vintage offered a cool, deliberate growing season with moderate heat, ensuring a slow and steady maturation. This resulted in Chardonnay boasting an exceptional structural backbone, zesty natural acidity, and perfect balance. WestLands is sourced exclusively from extreme, cool-climate sites—vineyards west of Sebastopol, located less than 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean—capturing the region’s intense mineral clarity and defining coastal essence, each adding its signature to the finished wine.
“Linear and racy in acidity, this is a steely, elegant white with a rounded midpalate and accents of honeysuckle and lemongrass. Meyer lemon, lime and blood orange combine with balanced oak and tannin, finishing in a touch of baking spice. Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast 2021
