2023 Pinot Noir, Felix Hunter Vineyard
94 points - International Wine Report
There’s a moment with this Pinot where the wine just opens up, when pomegranate and Rainier cherry rush forward first, followed by a swirl of warm baking spice that makes you want to linger over the glass. Underneath the brightness is real backbone, with firm, clove-kissed tannins that carry all the way through. It’s the kind of Pinot that deserves a second pour and a slower dinner.
About this wine
Anaba has worked with this vineyard since 2016, and the fruit has always been remarkable. We decided to make a vineyard designate wine because it’s simply too expressive of its place not to bottle on its own. The 2023 season gave us a cool spring and a long hangtime, which let the fruit build real depth without ever losing its edge of acidity. The result is a nose layered with complex spice, pomegranate, and Rainier cherry. It is inviting, but with clear intent. On the palate, ripe raspberry and cranberry lead into a wine with genuine structure, clove weaving through a mouthfeel that’s substantial without being heavy. The tannins are firm and linger long after the last sip, the kind of finish that makes you reach for the bottle again.
Owned by Jay Morris, this is a smaller vineyard tucked into the Green Valley pocket of the broader Sonoma Coast appellation. Its cool climate is exactly what makes the fruit so expressive, and it’s planted exclusively to Pinot Noir across a handful of clonal selections that give this wine its layered character.
