2023 Syrah, Bismark Vineyard
92 Points - Vinous
High-elevation growing brings a distinct elegance to this Syrah, where rich plum and boysenberry blend with warm clove, cracked pepper, and bay leaf. The palate reveals black raspberry and red plum laced with savory notes, supported by lively acidity. Fine tannins lead to a subtle, oak-kissed finish that lingers beautifully. About this wine
High in the Mayacamas Mountains at 2,100 feet, Bismark Vineyard sits above the fog line. Its volcanic soils and sun-drenched slopes produce deeply concentrated fruit. Through 30% whole cluster fermentation and 22 months of aging in French oak puncheons, winemaker Katy Wilson has crafted a Syrah defined by nuanced layers and refined structure.
This vintage began with a cool spring, holding steady right through a late October harvest. The extended hang time yielded a remarkably elegant Syrah, making it a gorgeous showcase of a cool Sonoma site that balances bright acidity with deep, full flavors.
With its savory depth and lithe structure, this is a versatile Syrah built for the dinner table. It shines alongside rosemary-rubbed lamb chops and roasted duck, though we especially love it paired with blue cheese stuffed mushrooms.
The 2023 Syrah Bismark Vineyard oozes old-school cool. Sassafras, cool-toned blue fruit, medicinal herbs and underbrush sizzle from the glass. Velvety tannins and bright acids wrap it all together in a mid-weight frame. There’s no shortage of character here. ~ Billy Norris, Vinous
